Mountain Maiden XC Race
2018 marks our 8th year running this race! This is the Second Qualifier for the ABA’s Alberta XC Cup.
The Mountain Maiden Returns with it’s usual “Legs of Steel” climbs, swooping singletrack & a few features to challenge the nerves, push your limits and nothing says it’s an epic ride other than a few sections of roots or the possibility of a wet foot or two.
The event will be capped at 200 participants.
BEAR SPRAY REQUIREMENT
Please note, as with last year, the Canmore Nordic Centre is requiring all event participants to carry bear spray while out on course! You will be asked to show your can of bear spray to a designated individual when entering the staging area and will not be permitted to start without it. If you are found to be on course without bear spray, you may be disqualified from the event.
Youth under 17 years of age are NOT required to carry bear spray.
Please read the full note here:
The race will be held at the Canmore Nordic Centre, located at 1988 Olympic Way, Canmore, AB. Follow signs from Canmore to Spray Lakes Rd (Hwy 742), then turn right onto Olympic Way into the centre.
The course will be available for pre-ride and inspection on Friday from 6pm, and Saturday morning until 9:00 am at the discretion of the commissaire.
All racers must sign-on prior to racing. Licensed racers must have their ABA number plate and license with them at sign-on. If you forget your ABA number plate, a new one can be purchased at sign-on for a fee of $10, so remember to bring your number plates! Sign-on will open on on race day from 8:00 am until 30 minutes prior to your start. ABA number plates will available at sign-on if you have not yet received yours.
The course is approximately 6 km.

What volunteer positions need to be filled?
Sign-On Help set up the sign-on table, as the athletes arrive check names and give out race packages
Course Set-Up People are needed Friday afternoon to set up the course tape and markings in the stadium area. One person needed on Saturday morning to ride the course checking signage and condition.
Volunteer Coordinator Be on-site to direct various volunteers to their required places. Communicate with volunteers on the day of the race, to ensure all course marshals are in place.
Starting, Timing & Results Sit at the timing tent and help with racer identification and timing.
Course Marshalls You will be stationed on the course, watching racers come through and calling for help in case of injury or other emergency. This is the most entertaining volunteer job since you usually get to watch the most technical sections of the race.
The Mountain Maiden XC Race is an important race in the Alberta circuit, and a showcase for the Spin Sisters. This is one of the most well attended XC mountain bike races in Alberta, and it's the most important race for the Spin Sisters Race Team. Most of the women in our Learn to Race program will do this as their first ever race! Our club is starting to show up on the podium in many women's categories. Hosting this race allows Spin Sisters to give back to the mountain biking community, and is great promotion for our club. But we need lots of volunteers to make this event a success!
Volunteering gives racers a chance to give back to the cycling community, and innocent bystanders a chance to witness the mayhem firsthand. There will be great food and prizes drawn for volunteers as well so come on out!
Remember that volunteers DO NOT have to be members of Spin Sisters so drag your friends and family along with you too!
