Trail Building & Maintenance
Spin Sisters are committed to giving back to the mountain bike community. We collaborate with Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance (CMBA), Friends of Fish Creek, and Friends of Kananaskis to help design, build, and maintain sustainable trail systems within Calgary and Kananaskis. In the past we have helped with trails in Fish Creek Park, the Highline Trail in Canmore, and the new Ridgeback Trail in the Bragg Creek area (“reroutes” for the particularly bad sections of Tom Snow).
Spin Sisters devote several days every year to trail building, although we encourage our membership to get involved as much as possible to make our trail systems the best around! On June 5, 2010 we will be combining our Spin Sister Welcome BBQ with a day of trail maintenance and riding in the Bragg Creek area. We are still confirming which sections we will be working on, as well as a second date later in the season – check the forum and stay tuned to your email for details!
How you can help?
- Come out on Spin Sister trail-building days to join in the fun and take ownership of the trails we ride!
- Volunteer for other CMBA trail-building days and/or evenings – stay tuned to the forum for the schedule!
- Volunteer for the Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society trail days!
- Ride the new trails to help pack them down with your mighty treads!
- Provide feedback so we can continue to improve!
Happenings in the Trail-Building Community:
- CMBA is hosting an IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) trail-building course at the end of May
- CMBA is ironing out details and approvals for several projects this year, including:
- Continued tweaking of the Ridgeback Trail (there are some spots that are still rough)
- Collaborating with GBCTA (Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association) to build a new trail from the West Bragg parking lot along Ranger Ridge, and connector trails between it and the Ridgeback Trail to form a new loop
- Collaborating with the City of Calgary to fix Sideshow Bob in Bowmont Park – it's been steadily eroding into the river and could use some remediation to the bench cuts
- Taking ownership maintenance of Moosepackers Trail
- Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society (MMBTS) are responsible for trails such as Race of Spades and Pneuma, to name just a few. I haven't heard their specific plans for the season yet, but no doubt they will be hard at work yet again! I will post their details on the forum as I get them!
- Friends of Fish Creek are finishing up their planned trail additions to complete the Fish Creek circuit and have started closing the unapproved trails that criss-cross the park.
How would you like to come out and build a brand new trail?
